Coming Out: A 50 Year History

Transgender teen, Jazz Jennings, narrates this documentary where young people interview a host of LGBTQ elders who came out in different historical eras from the 1950s through today. These inspiring talks give insight into the political and personal changes that shaped the modern LGBTQ movement. The young interviewers get an opportunity to compare and contrast their "coming out" experience with people who came out during McCarthy, Civil Rights, post-Stonewall, and AIDS eras. In the end, they learn that every generation of activists stands on the shoulders of those who came before and that activism needs to continue even in the light of great social strides.

Before Stonewall

BEFORE STONEWALL pries open the closet door--setting free the dramatic story of the sometimes horrifying public and private existences experienced by gay and lesbian Americans since the 1920s. ONE NATION UNDER GOD takes us into the strange world of "ex-gay" ministries and "conversion" therapies, revealing shocking techniques used to "straighten" out all those "twisted" souls. At the center of the film are two former leaders of one of the biggest ex-gay ministries... who just happen to fall in love.

Changing the Game

Emmy® award-winning filmmaker Michael Barnett’s urgent and subsuming sports documentary illuminates what many have called the civil rights issue of our time: transgender inclusion in sports. CHANGING THE GAME takes us into the lives of three high school athletes—all at different stages of their athletic seasons, personal lives, and unique paths as transgender teens. Their stories span across the U.S. — from Sarah, a skier and teen policymaker in New Hampshire, to Andraya, a track star in Connecticut openly competing on the girls track team. The film centers on Mack Beggs, who made headlines when he became the Texas State Champion in girls wrestling – as a boy.

Before Homosexuals: The History of Same-Sex Desire

John Scagliotti, executive producer of the landmark film Before Stonewall, guides us in a wondrous tour of erotic history, poetry and visual art in his new documentary on same-sex desire – from ancient times to Victorian crimes.

Pronouns

Apart from using people's names, pronouns are the way we express our gender and refer to other people's gender – but traditional gender pronouns (she/her, he/him) do not fit everyone's gender identity. These pronouns do not leave room for other, diverse gender identities. This can be difficult for individuals who do not identify as he or she. People who identify outside of a gender binary often use pronouns that are not gender specific. It is important to be aware of and to use the names and pronouns that people choose for themselves to express their gender. In this course psychologist Peter Quarry talks with Lore Burns about using gender neutral pronouns and why it matters to use them correctly. You will learn strategies for using non-gendered or gender-neutral pronouns in social and work situations, and why it is important.
