Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science which creates systems that can produce intelligence to solve various problems. These systems are either trained through rules inputted by a programmer or through machine learning, where the system creates its own rules while processing data. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot built on a large language model. It has been trained on a large body of written text to provide human-like responses to users' questions.
This guide explores the development and cultural impact of artificial intelligence, and how ChatGPT in particular might affect higher education. The tabs on the side of this page will direct you to information about books, articles, streaming videos, and online resources. If you have any trouble finding these sources, please ask a librarian for help.
ChatGPT and generative A.I. create implications for student writing, academic integrity, and most importantly, student retention. While Generative A.I. will write on behalf of its users, Instructional A.I. is A.I. that helps teach writing and thinking skills. Packback and The League of Innovation in the Community College co-presented this webinar all about AI’s effect on education. Packback COO, Kelsey Behringer, and Maricopa Community College District Director, Steven Crawford, discuss how colleges are holistically utilizing Instructional A.I. to both prevent the negative implications of Generative A.I. such as ChatGPT, as well as to improve student learning outcomes. League for Innovation in the Community College President and CEO, Rufus Glasper, provided the introduction.
