While America continues to become a more culturally diverse country with new immigrants arriving and those already here raising families, healthcare providers in the United States still largely come from a white, non-Hispanic background—almost 82%. Unfamiliar languages, beliefs, cultural practices, eating habits, etc., all present potential obstacles to the nurse providing care. This program will review the concept of cultural awareness in healthcare and demonstrate the need to bring cultural awareness into American healthcare. After completing this course, the learner should be able to: • Describe the importance of cultural awareness in the healthcare field. • Explain some of the cultural differences that exist among patient populations. • Describe some of the major cultural awareness studies that have been completed over the past 60 years. • Explain the components of several key models that are designed to foster cultural awareness within the healthcare system.
Nursing Clinical Skills Collection:
Training videos demonstrating critical skills for nurses.
Community Health and Family Nursing Series
This collection is a valuable adjunct for use in classroom/seminar settings or in continuing education for health professionals. Audiovisual resources are known to enhance the learning experience of students. This is particularly so when these resources are linked to "real life" experiences, thereby enabling students to connect theory to practice. Engaging students and health professionals to actively participate in learning experiences is an ongoing challenge.
Competent Care In a Culturally Diverse Nation
Culturally competent care adapts care interventions to the cultural needs and preferences (ethnic and religious beliefs, values, and practices) of diverse clients. This program provides practical and effective methods of recognizing and dealing with the special needs of different cultures.
Career Decisions: Nursing - An Invaluable Guide to Prospective Nursing Students
