A diverse cast of visionary teenagers, stirring public protests, private threats, criminal charges, and drama-filled school board meetings: this is the explosive world of BANNED TOGETHER. The film pulls back the curtain on two of the most controversial issues in America today: book bans and curriculum censorship in public schools.
Many documentary films give us important information about what is wrong with our society, but they often fail to offer a solution. Project Censored: The Movie explores and publicizes censorship in our society by exposing important stories that the public should be aware of, but is not. Project Censored is a media watchdog group and is the solution to Corporate Media’s failure to give the American public real news and information.
A report on the banned book controversy. The highly opposed campaign to ban ninety-seven books from Beaufort, South Carolina’s school system has been inspired by the Florida-based conservative group Moms for Liberty, which aims to censor literature they consider unfit for American children.
Battles have erupted at schools, school boards and library meetings across the country as parents, lawmakers and advocacy groups are debating books. The American Library Association documented more than 1,200 demands to censor books and resources last year, the highest since it started collecting data 20 years ago. Jeffrey Brown discussed more with the group's director, Deborah Caldwell-Stone.
